SPANISH DAILY NEWSPAPERS
The most important Spanish daily newspapers published in Madrid are El País,
ABC and El Mundo. They are directly followed by two daily newspapers published
in Barcelona, La Vanguardia and El Periódico de Catalunya that are read
primarily in Catalonia and considerably less in the rest of Spain.
El País (since 1976) is the Spanish daily newspaper with the highest
circulation and is supporting the socialists. It has a number of regional and
international editions.
ABC (since 1903) is one of the oldest Spanish newspapers published in Madrid.
It is supporting the Spanish monarchy and the Popular Party although claiming
to be independent.
El Mundo (since 1989), as the newest of Madrid's newspapers, rated high being a
popular alternative to El País and ABC and also the most independent-minded
newspaper published in Madrid.
La Vanguardia (since 1881) is the oldest Spanish newspaper especially popular
in the Catalan middle class. It has a balanced coverage of regional, national
and international events.
El Periódico de Catalunya (since 1978) is published in Spanish and Catalan
contrary to La Vanguardia. El Periódico is supporting the socialists, also in a
critical way. Most of his readers are Catalonian people.
Important Basque newspapers are El Correo (Spanish), Gara (Spanish and Basque)
and El Diario Vasco (Spanish). In Galicia you can find La Voz de Galicia
(Spanish) and El Correo Gallego (Spanish and Galician).
As
the Spanish people are very attracted by sports newspapers particularly those
emphasizing on football, you can find the two sports papers Marca and AS among
the ten most sold daily newspapers.
In the last few years there were also a lot of very successful economic
journals published like El Comercio or La Gaceta de los Negocios. The most
