SHOPPING IN SPAIN

Shopping in Spain can be a really nice thing to do in your spare time but you should not expect it to be the same like in your home-country. The quality of Shopping in Spain can be quite different depending on the region or the part of the country you are in.

Shopping in SpainThe best products to buy in Spain are pottery, ceramics, paintings and other handcrafted items. Spanish leather goods like shoes, jackets, purses, belts and bags are also highly recommended and of good quality. But you should compare prices as these things are not always cheap. Every Spanish region has its own specialities and their traditional food. In any case you should buy some Spanish wine and taste Spanish cheese and chorizo, the typical Spanish sausage.

In the Spanish metropolitan areas around the big cities like Madrid and Barcelona and also in the major tourist areas in Spain , you can find commercial centres with big department stores offering all manner of goods to do your daily shopping. Beyond the numerous supermarkets in Spain you can find Spanish stores like Eroski and Hipercor but there are also a lot of international chains like Carrefour. All over spain you can find international operating discount stores such as Dia, Aldi and Lidl, where you can buy groceries of high quality to lower prices and every week they offer different non-food articles to special prices. At most of the supermarkets and discounters in Spain your shopping can be delivered home. If you buy groceries and other items for more than 50 or 60? (depending on the supermarket), the delivery will be free of charge.

In the big cities there are also some bigger shops but the smaller the town the smaller are the shops you can find. If you come to rural areas, the majority of the Spanish stores will be small family run shops. To reach a bigger super- or hypermarket you will have to leave the town and do your shopping in the outskirts where you will probably find a bigger shopping centre with international and typical Spanish stores.

If this is not the case or if you even do not want to search for such a place, this will be the perfect possibility for you to get used to Spanish culture. You can start learning Spanish while doing your shopping in a traditional Spanish store. To do your shopping in the right traditional Spanish way you should make sure to have some coffee breaks in between and eat some Spanish tapas in one of the numerous bars that you can find everywhere in Spain.
