ELECTIONS IN YOUR OWN COUNTRY

While living in Spain you will usually also have the right to vote at elections held in your home country. The procedure of registration as an overseas or absentee voter may be different in every country. To be allowed to vote in your own country from abroad you normally have to provide a former address in your country of origin under which you was registered on the electoral register before. You can register as an overseas elector as soon you are moving to Spain in respect of your last address in your home country. You can get more information on this from the nearest consular or diplomatic of your home country in Spain . They will also provide you with the necessary registration and declaration forms.

When the election is near you will receive all the information you would also receive in your home country and you can vote by post. But you should consider whether this is appropriate due to the postal services. You should send your polling card quite early so that it will arrive in time. Some countries, like the UK , offer the possibility to appoint someone living in the UK to vote on your behalf. This person is called a proxy and must be able and willing to vote on your behalf and also legally allowed to vote. He or she must be living in the UK and must be a British citizen or a citizen of the Commonwealth or of the Republic of Ireland . The application form for appointing a proxy is attached to the Overseas Elector's Declaration form available at the nearest British consular or diplomatic in Spain where you can also get more information on how to appoint a proxy and whom to assign this job.
